The basic process of airborne asbestos fibre monitoring involves collecting a measured quantity of air in a sampling pump through a membrane filter. This filter collects fibres in the air which can then be sized and counted by means of a phase-contrast microscope with a Walton-Beckett graticuled eyepiece. The phase-contrast microscope uses Koehler illumination for the ultimate standard of accuracy.
The result is then provided to you as fibres per millimetre of air. The Safe Work Australia database (HSIS – Hazardous Substances Information Search) identifies the standard for all asbestos types to be 0.1 fibres/ml in the air.
